In 2004, Shanta founded the New Image Youth Center (NIYC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, in Orlando, FL at the age of 21 with only $1,500 and 8 children. The goal was to provide a safe haven for this poverty-stricken community’s neighborhood. Twelve years later, the success of New Image Youth Center has changed lives with over 18 high school graduates, a Morehouse College graduate, and many young businessmen and businesswomen. NIYC has grown to include two facilities in the Parramore community, along with a dance/exercise room and the addition of a community garden where Shanta and the kids grow organic food for the homeless. Shanta currently helps mentor over 65 children per day in the Parramore community. New Image Youth Center provides an after school program and summer camp for at-risk youth in the Parramore community of downtown Orlando. With the community’s specific needs in mind, the three key areas in which they offer year-round programming are academic support, social development, and health and wellness. Offering life skills lessons, tutoring, nutrition classes, family counseling, and much more, NIYC has become a safe haven for the children and teens of Parramore, providing a comprehensive range of services for nearly 100 students annually, all at no cost to participants. All participating NIYC seniors have graduated high school, six are enrolled in post-secondary coursework, no active participants have been involved with juvenile justice or have had a teen pregnancy, and over $500,000 in-kind donations have been received through volunteerism.

For her own achievements and commitment to community, she has been the recipient of several honors, including the Bank of America Local Hero Award in 2007, the NBA 2008 Orlando Magic Maker Award, the 2011 L’Oreal Women of Worth top 10 nominee, and winner of the national title Miss Corporate America in 2009. Shanta Barton-Stubbs is the first African American woman to win this title. She was also honored as the Emerging Leader of the Year in 2013 by the Women’s Executive Council, and as the 2015 Ms. Florida Excellence. She also judges the National Miss American pageant each year, along with others.

Dr. Shanta Barton-Stubbs is living proof that one person can truly make a difference.
